The Johnny Holm concert
held on the first day of fall semester at the
Bison Sports Arena has almost become a tradition
at SU for freshmen and upper-classmen alike. But
many students may no know that this event is actually
a fundraising drive for Theta Chi fraternity at
SU.
This year, the Johnny
Holm band that played on Aug. 29 attracted around
4,200 students raising $5,000 for Theta Chi, which
was twice the amount ever raised before through
this event. Last Tuesday, the fraternity donated
this amount to the YWCA of Fargo-Moorhead at a
presentation, which included a formal dinner and
a tour of the Theta Chi house.
The members attribute
this year's success to the publicity on campus
for the event. Taylor Lane, the public relations
chair for the fraternity, talked about last year's
show when he was a freshman. "I was very
impressed that a bunch of frat guys could put
up this sort of a show," he said during the
presentation, "And then this year, it turned
out that there were more people than ever in the
past. Even the morning of the event, I'd hear
people all over the place asking 'Hey, are you
going to Johnny Holm's?' So it seemed like we
managed to get the word out a lot more this year."
Lynn Holzer, shelter
director at the YWCA, also spoke at the presentation
thanking the member of Theta Chi for all that
they have done for them. "The proceeds of
the Johnny Holm band that you are giving to the
YWCA will help the shelter in a variety of ways.
Everything you have in your bathroom, we have
to have in our bathrooms time 50. Shampoo, all
paper products and a lot of the proceeds will
be going into our general supplies for the shelters."
She also said that some
of the proceeds will go into rewarding women who
finish an intensive job preparation course that
YWCA offers. Rewards include "haircut vouchers
or going to a salon, anything of that sort, because
our residents don't get to be pampered at all."
Holzer said.
Theta Chi has been making
annual donations to the YWCA since 1993 and members
of the social fraternity also help at the women's
shelter about five times a semester with jobs
like painting, cleaning, moving furniture and
unloading trucks.
Along with representatives
of YWCA, President Joseph Chapman, Dean of Student
Affairs Prakash Mathew and Vice President for
Student Affairs George Wallman attended the presentation
ceremony.
